Overview

This new two-day weekend course is led by tutor Arudhra Krishnaswamy and will introduce participants to a variety of tools, techniques and processes of performance. It will allow them to use their bodies and movement in ways that will help to strengthen their presence, characterisation, and awareness, as well as improve their overall engagement with an audience. The course is comprised of a number of elements incorporating movement, improvisation, imagery, text, music, videos and speech as tools for exploration.

It is suitable for actors, dancers, movement practitioners as well as aspiring or established choreographers.

The workshops will cover a wide variety of topics and each one will be addressed through play, research, exploration, and conversations including:

Day 1:

  • Mirroring and Empathy – partner and group tasks
  • Projection and Presence - less is more
  • Motivated Movement
  • Authentic Movement - Jung’s Active Imagination
  • Gestures
  • Personalisation

Day 2:

  • Kinaesthetic Awareness – creating a dialogue between awareness and action
  • Proprioception and Touch – Body Awakening
  • Movement exploration: Improvisation through Laban movement analysis to allow the students to understand their bodies, their choices and create new patterns
  • Emotional Engagement – solo and partner activities using:
  • Imagery
  • Text
  • Props
  • Speech
  • Performance Analysis – videos and reflections
  • Final feedback, reflection and journaling

About the tutor

Arudhra Krishnaswamy has been dancing since she was four years old. She started off as a Classical Indian dancer, then trained in Lyrical Jazz in her early twenties and found her sense of belonging in the fluidity and independence of Contemporary Dance.

Arudhra recently completed a Masters in Dance and Performance Studies at UCD. She is a lecturer in Theatre and Film Practice at Dundalk Institute of Technology, as well as a lecturer in English, Drama and Film at UCD. She is also a Research Fellow with the School of Literatures, Languages & Cultures at Trinity College Dublin.

She previously completed her PhD in Cultural Studies at the National University of Singapore. She has studied the Anthropology of Dance Therapy because she strongly believes that dance is not only glamorous and entertaining but is also a beautiful language of communication. She is a former lecturer of dance at the Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) where she taught both dance theory as well as practice at the School of Dance and Theatre.

Arudhra has spoken widely at conferences nationally and internationally from Galway, Lisbon and Madrid to Tokyo. She has published numerous academic papers; and taught various workshops and intensive programmes in various cities including, Bandung, Jakarta, Singapore, Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai. She is a former company dancer of The Danceworx in India and The Royal Dance-Off Company in Singapore. She was a founding faculty member of the Millenium Dance Complex, Singapore. She has also worked extensively as a choreographer.

In the event of a cancellation more than one month prior to the course start date on courses costing €250+ a forfeiture of €250 will be retained to cover administration costs.

In the event of a cancellation more than one month prior to the course start date on short courses priced below €250, a forfeiture of the total course fee will be retained

No refunds or offers of deferral will be issued in the event of any short course moving online due to Covid-19 restrictions.

A withdrawal less than one month before the course start date will result in the forfeiture of the entire fee.
