Costume - Level 1 - Sewing and Alterations

This introduction to costume is perfect for participants with previous experience in amateur theatre or no experience at all, who want to learn more about the fundamentals of the costume department in a theatre-focused environment.
Overview
This course is designed as an entry level skills development course for anyone who has an interest in learning more about working in a theatre costume department, clothing alteration, hand and machine sewing.
This 10-week course, taught by professional costume supervisors and designers, will provide each participants with the best working practices of a professional costume department. Each participant will develop proficiency in hand and machine sewing skills. They will learn about the measuring and fitting process for cast members and best practices/etiquette. Each participant will leave the course having successfully altered a common piece of costume for contemporary theatre; a skill that can be applied both professionally and personally in the future.

LaurA Fajardo Castro is a Colombian costume and set designer based in Dublin. She has worked for theatre, dance, opera and tv. Her main interest is approaching design for theatre in a sustainable way. LaurA graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Los Andes University in Bogotá, Colombia. In 2018 she moved to Ireland and graduated with an MFA in Stage Design from The Lir Academy, Trinity College Dublin.
Her recent design works include: Reverb by Luail, Ireland's National Dance Company, Amelia at Dublin Theatre Festival 2024, Afterwards at Dublin Fringe Festival 2024, IÓMHÁ by Roisín Whelan, The Ireland we dreamed of by Sinead McCann, You Belong to Me by Rough Magic, The Mandate, The Visit, Bulrusher and Three Sisters at The Lir Academy and more. LaurA has worked as Assistant/Associate Designer for leading Irish designers Katie Davenport, Aedín Cosgrove, Sarah Bacon and Francis O'Connor on a wide variety of productions. In Bogotá, LaurA worked for 4 years with the theatre company 'Teatro Estudio Uniandes'. LaurA is currently the Secretary of the Irish Society of Performance Designers (ISPD).
