Lir Alumni Paul Mescal Receives Oscar Nomination

A massive congratulations to Lir alumni Paul Mescal on his Oscar Nomination!

Lir graduate, Paul Mescal, has just received an Oscar Nomination in the category Best Actor for his recent role of Calum in Charlotte Wells' Aftersun.

The Independent wrote: "Paul Mescal is frighteningly good in this heartbreaking father-daughter drama that will surprise you at every turn".

Paul Mescal, who graduated in 2017, received praise for his starring role of Connell in Normal People, earning a British Academy Television Award, as well as a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award.

He has shared the screen with the likes of Olivia Coleman in The Lost Daughter, Emily Watson in God's Creatures, and many more.

For God's Creatures, he received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Performance. For Aftersun, he has already received a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

In Aftersun, Mescal plays Calum – the loving and idealistic father of Sophie. The film is set twenty years in the past, when Sophie reflects on their last holiday together – Sophie's recollections become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn't.

Mescal is currently playing Stanley Kowalski in a revival of the play A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennesse Williams at the Almeida Theatre.
