The year is 1669 and for the first time in English history, women are allowed to tread the boards. April De Angelis' Playhouse Creatures is a gritty, funny, and ultimately moving backstage look at the lives of five pioneering actresses. As they fight for fame, fortune, and a scrap of autonomy in a male-dominated theatre, these women discover that while the applause is intoxicating, the cost of staying in the spotlight is higher than they ever imagined.
