17th century rural life is no joke – gripped by poverty, political violence, plague, and oppressive Christianity. Female sexuality, indigenous wisdom, and the mystery of the unknown pose an overwhelming threat.

When Puritan witch hunters breeze in offering to cleanse the village from such evils at a bargain price, neighbours turn on neighbours. Finally, a reason for their woes! Women who are old, poor, single, vocal and sexually free become, as ever, perfect scapegoats.

Director Annie Ryan sets Caryl Churchill’s sharp, subversive and bitingly funny feminist play Vinegar Tom, on its 50th anniversary, here in Ireland, for an extra colonial kick.
